Apologies if this has been covered in a previous post...
Can anyone clarify who decided to take a drill to "Baxter is a shit" on Castle Crag, after CB passed away? I never met Chris, but the impression I have gained from bits of climbing literature and chat on this site like this is that he had a sense of pride in the way he was viewed amongst the climbing community. I thought the graffiti was a great example of Australian humour, and felt the myths and stories about who wrote it only made the inscription more interesting. So I, and others, found the desecration of the graffiti to be really sad. A piece of climbing culture was ruined, seemingly by an act of self-righteousness.
Considering that I never knew Chris, I guess that it is possible that there are some good reasons I'm not aware of for the "removal" of the graffiti. If so, I'd love to hear about it. That way me and my mates may not feel so peeved every time we walk past Castle Crag. |
