Wouldn't dream of taking a drill over. Luggage restriction is only 14kg so by the time the surfboard and wettie and walking shoes are loaded there isn't too much room for anything else. (The place is too special to think of putting up sports climbs). I was there a few years ago to do some bush regeneration but hadn't got into climbing at that stage. From memory the off route scrambling I did was pretty chossy, but I figure there has to be some decent boulders somewhere. I may as well slip in a pair of rock shoes and will report back.
Too much surf and no climbing is bad for the finger tips!
John Pettigrew has a link on his website to the first ascent of Balls pyramid with some great old photoes. Centipedes sounded like another major hazard during attempts, and trying to find a boat owner happy to pick you up. What a great climb to do though.
I just got a message back from the LHI board saying all climbing has to be approved in a formal application to them, but still no info on what is around.
