***** Wafer Thin Fin By Neil Monteith  3/3/2009
Wafer Thin Fin Click Image To Enlarge
Mike Law on the 2nd ascent of my new three pitch 'sport' route Wafer Thin Fin (23) on this knifeblade arete on the Lost Pillar, Dalpura Head, Blue Mountains. The route is protected by a mix of bolts and fixed slings threaded through holes in the arete! See Also: Pic 2 | Pic 3 | Details

wicked snap Neil! Looks even better if you cover the opposing wall. Some sharp holds on the route I expect?

Blerrie fantastic.

What size telephoto was used to get this shot/s?

Hope the person in the bushes (main photo), isn't the belayer as they are a long way back!

Post edit 17/03/09:
Just noticed another person in the bushes much closer to base of climb, ... appears to be belaying. 'Tis funny how these things are missed when initially presented with gob smacking scenery!

200mm lens on 35mm sensor camera. The guy in the bushes was just a spectator hiding from the choss raining down.

Brilliant pic. The colours in the rock and what Mikl is wearing give it an otherworldly appearence.

Wow that's got to be set to be a classic...I've now got yet another one to tick off the ever expanding list!

Thanks for the feedback nm.

I reckon you have used that shot prematurely, but can see why you would be stoked to do so.
It would have been an excellent contribution to Crux mag, etc.

I might start a thread about the value of threaded pro. / angles of loading etc. In one of those shots mikl has clipped what looks like a threaded bit of dynamic rope? that extends beyond the wafer edge. The angle of loop if loaded would be way more than the ideal max of 60 degrees, and given Nick's tragic rope cutting accident recently would cause me concern in that situation.

The threaded ropes are pretty loose, so the angles wouldn't be too extreme.

Who is the "casual" observer?

The observer was either young Ben or Mathias from 'St Peter's gym'. They seconded Mike up the route. I think it was their 3rd time outdoors!

awesome photo. awesome line, i bet it is an instant classic.

my eye keeps look for a bit more the to left and the right hand wall is pretty uninteresting so maybe would have shot it a bit to the left. but that is pretty minor. great photo.

Nice one Neilo. So, did you use glue-ins or just put washers and nuts on the back
side? Shame about crux, by the way. Hope you can get it flying again

congratulations on this route neil, its a beautiful looking line.

I first saw this image in the middle of a roadshow raising some more capital, 9 cities in 5 days, late nights/early mornings all the way...it SO made me want to go climbing, had to keep telling myself "30 April and I'm done".

looks great. Looks as though whole fin might snap off one day. Might be a good one for double-ropes. Bold climbing and nice composition, well done.

You bet its on the list Rod, so much so I'll give it another 5 stars!

Got on rock for the first time in an age on Sunday and pulled down on some boulder problems. Winter fingerboard/bouldering certainly adds power but man have I ever got to lose weight: power problems sent = 8 or so newies; endurance problems sent = 0...thankfully the 9 city tour of wining and dining is over and done with!
