My spam came from rose_12v1@yahoo.com.
Might want to see if that is attached to any accounts.

Email address isn't visible (from memory) until you log in and view someone's profile, or view a message they have posted.
What do you guys want me to do? I can remove the display of email addresses if you want.

I can't speak for others on this topic, but I have found the email facility to be useful behind the scenes, especially when a person has not checked PM's (or their PM box is full).
I don't regularly use it though; so if it was to be taken off, then I wouldn't miss it greatly.
If ajfclark is right, does it matter too much (ie the deed is already done?), given that spam emails can be blocked by many providers now?
Probably a mute point, but does the spammer still require logging in to do the dirty work, or is their trade an auto-generated thingy now?
~> Given some of the trolls that have frequented this site, it would be poetic justice for them to end up conversing with a spammer!

Generally, once an address starts receiving spam, it never stops. Lists of valid email addresses can be sold quite easily and for decent money. I think it's quite likely that a human did create the accounts that were used to harvest the email addresses, it wouldn't take long or much effort. Given the number of members/email addresses, it would've been worthwhile. So stopping the spammers from creating accounts isn't likely without preventing legitimate users creating accounts too.
So what can we do? Obfuscating the email address when it's displayed it about the only option I can think of. One method of doing that is using javascript write.document calls rather than including an actual email address. This doesn't make it impossible for people to harvest from the site but it would make it a lot harder.

If the harvesting of valid email addies was manually done in that they had to create an account, then they certainly have time on their hands, but to what end?

We may be only dealing with something 'small-time' here, rather than a full blown annoyance?
For them to achieve anything it seems the ball is in our court (as recipients), to respond back to them??

...one incident in 7 years doesn't seem to warrant the removal of email addresses. I use them quite often - and also like that it identifies trollers quicker!

Why are they selective... I didn't get one... not that I want one. Just wondered. x

Are you suggesting we could spam the spammer? That would be ironic

display them as an image. i'm not sure what sort of set-up you're running but it shouldn't be too hard to find a plug in that will generate an image with the email address instead of showing it as text. its still convenient (as long as you're happy typing it from a picture), and is a lot harder to grab for spam.

Since that email this morning I have gotten several more along the same lines. Also these are the first
spam emails I have gotten at this profile address. So I am all for the email addresses not being visible if
it is an option. Although it could already be too late now that bastards have it!!
