For those with a need to save a few dollars on a stove.
I'm actually quite impressed with this.

You can make a much simpler one without the central trangia-style well with two can bases shoved together (obviously not Foster's though...) and a central hole stopped with a wide screw for filling purposes. I put my jets on the inside of the rim and made them by tapping through a thick sewing needle with a hammer, but otherwise quite similar. The simple one may well build up a bit more pressure once it gets nice and hot and the (blue) flame is bigger, but the end-result is pretty similar. Boils much quicker than the normal trangia burner, but then again they are a piece of crap after all. Yet another good excuse to drink more beer, as if you needed one.

That must be one big carrot, maybe a turnip would be better?

I don't see any problem with this. The threat of a horrible firey death is what makes the MSR's so much fun to use. If the Trangia burner can blow up that levels the field significantly.
Heard a story from a mate about a 1L aluminium bottle full of Shellite blowing up in the fire. Apparently it was fairly spectacular.

The fact that MSR stands for Mountain Safety Research is one of the greatest ironies of the modern world.
I remember lending my MSR whisperlight to a friend and giving her a run-down on how to light it.
Me: Let a bit of shellite drip out and then set fire to the stove. As the flames are dying down, slowly open up the valve and the stove should light.
Her: You're shitting me. This is like something Russians would make.

if you get it hot enough under pressure, it should explode pretty good.

But what if you don't drink it first?

Yeah, 'under pressure' is the key bit. You're not going to do that with a beer can and a hole punch.

Yeah, I can't really think of any way they could have made that happen.

She must have had some experience with Russian physicists in a laser lab. Such a
scary willingness to give their lives for science. Berylium poisoning, Loss of sight or
limb, Radiation sickness, all considered perfectly good ways to end ones career. Still
none of that is scary as the dental work they all had.
...shiver.
