Bas Cuvier used to be filthy. Then they stopped people bivvying there. I know. It can be pretty obscene. Even when loos are provided. I found a pile of ordure in the corner of a public loo in Cholet despite a gleaming white porcelain facility being less than 2m away. I've already mentioned on here , elsewhere, how I climbed an icefall in the Dolomites a few years ago with a Spanish "friend" who was quite happy to crap on the first belay and seemed surprised when we asked him to bury it. However, to suggest that "Europeans don't understand the burying aspect of crapping in the woods" and to say "Cats have better toilet manners than Europeans" is the usual kind of xenophobic claptrap that seems quite common on Chockstone and ought to be below somebody who, I think I'm right in saying, is a moderator. You do say some silly things Neil.

Cheers, Karl

Well you are speaking to a European now, Olbert. Unless you don't include Britain as Europe. I have seen both fetid places next to the road where scumbags shit and move on and I've seen pristine places barely touched by humans. It may be a function of numbers. I have seen shit and bogroll in the ditch next to the pines at Arapiles. My opinion for what it's worth is that there are some dirtbags in the world. Maybe more in Europe than here, but then there are a lot more people generally and a hell of a lot more climbers, some of whom are likely to be filthy buggers but many of whom have precisely the same hygiene values as most Australians. To suggest otherwise smacks of xenophobia and simplistic thinking.

Are you for real? When was the last time you were there? I went 4 years ago and the forest floor was quite well covered in used frangers, with shit piles also well represented. Word was that it's the place where all the local hookers conduct their business. I'm never going back as it was utterly disgusting.

Saying that the French and Italians are filthy non-buriers of poop is no more xenophobic than saying Germans are pushy pricks who don't understand the concept of a queue, the British are obsessed with dingy little micro-crags, or that American climbers often overestimate their abilities........where's the problem?

Chill Karl! It's called a generalization. And my cat manages to bury his shit every time - something humans all around the world have problems with.

C'mon guys - back to arguing about the bolting and chipping. Can't believe when there actually is a topic slagging bolting and chipping which other topics tend to morph into, you guys carry on about toilet habits...

European enough to take offence, but not quite european enough to give up the pound sterling, eh Karl?

I gave it up 5 years ago for the Australian Dollar, Damian. (Do still hang on to a few quid in me wallet just in case though)

so its ok to generalise about groups from regions then?

Seems to me by example of euro that lots of places like asia-china, and also australia to! that have a lot of generalised subjects in theyre populations that it is taboo to mention specifically, but ok to generalise about on this site then.

who is holding the mark of where to stop generalsing, if not a moderator?

That's all pretty reasonable............except the obese bit, I'd wear that from a proper european but it's a little rich coming from a pom. See, lighthearted ribbing of foreigners and their weird habits is fun. Although I think one trait you missed is that Australians generally seem to be able to hear negative things about themselves without taking it too seriously.

On that last point of yours, I did cringe pretty hard recently when Swannie (with his treasurer of the year oscar in hand) was dishing out a lecture to a bunch of European leaders on how they ought to tighten their belts...........gawd, you could almost see the thought bubbles floating over their heads!

Damian, I agree with your first point above, but surely Neil wasn't making light hearted fun. He was making a point about something that genuinely disgusts both him and yourself (and me)and then generalising with his swipe at Europeans in an unfunny way. Actually the point about cats having better toilet habits was moderately witty I suppose.

On your second point above, I beg to differ. Pisstaking is the most common form of humor in the UK and probably much of the rest of the world. I have certainly genuinely upset a few Australians over the year with tasteless jokes at their expense. I have noticed many Australians seem to have the same kind of sarcasm or irony bypass that a lot of Americans demonstrate. The idea that pisstaking is uniquely Australian is as much a myth as the idea that you invented mates and yeast extract breakfast spread.

Not to mention give everybody a fair go ...

Certainly there's no shortage of poo and other rubbish at roadside stops, campsites and busy crags in australia either, and the lesser amounts of it at crags probably is in proportion tot he number of people rather than their improved habits. and also just the leading by example - a crag full of poo and rubbish is probably going to acquire more of the same, whereas it's harder to not think about it in an otherwise clean area. But next time you see someone throw rubbish out the window of the car or drop their cigarette butt on the ground, I think you can be assured they won;t be burying their poo either.

ODH, BC was like that 2 years ago too.

On chipping... well, I haven't developed anywhere new, but chipping seems a bit egocentric to me. I guess I'm happy to accept that I'm not going to be able to climb everything.

I've found that there's certain Brits and Australians that are brilliant at the noble art of sarcasm and pisstaking, and then there's the sad majority.

I didn't find anywhere near the 'poo problem' at American crags whilst the 30 or so Euro crags I have visited in Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Italy and Austria all had (sometimes massive!) piles of poos at the end of the crag or next to or ON the track to the crag. My generalization relates to the 'climbing' population of these regions - not the general population. There are plenty of filthy Aussies dumping their loads at truck stops along our highways...

Somewhere incredibly busy like Thompsons Point and Arapiles have almost no rubbish or poo in sight anywhere. And the little that does appear occasionally I reckon could potentially be blamed on clueless overseas climbers...

Aussie guidebooks (and American ones) usually always contain stern words at the front of the guide about not littering and crapping in the open. I haven't seen the same awareness of the problem in Europe. Certainly talking to several Europeans about it at over the years they didn't see burying as a worthwhile activity. A rock on top was the extent of their effort.

And I don't class Britain as Europe BTW. British crags were clean as far as I could see. :-)

Is that the climbers or the rain keeping it clean?

Entente Cordiale resumed. Phew!

You had some pretty bad luck with your choice of European crags if you found piles of human excrement at "all" of them. I can't refute what you saw. I'm sure you're telling the truth but wow, "all" of them. I've visited a great many crags during my previous life in Europe, and have seen it but not at most never mind "all". You must have some kind of inbuilt poo seaking device.

Cheers, Karl
