Red Rain Wall descent gully

we were at Gilhams yesterday & the descent gully to get off Red Rain Wall is a bit of a nightmare at the moment... not much vegetation has regrown in the area after the bush fires earlier in the year, so walking down the (steep) gully was a delicate dance to avoid sliding down the sand & dislodging rocks & boulders etc.

It probably doesn't get too much traffic, but it wouldn't take much at the moment to really trash the gully. Perhaps a rap anchor might be appropriate?? I didn't look round to see if there was central location that would service all the routes. I would be interested in hearing comments from anyone else who has been there recently (perhaps in the Safer Cliffs forum).

In the meantime, tread carefully!

Yeah, the gully past the grey buttress (can't remember the name of the wall, past red rain wall) is pretty yuck too.

we did Cloud Nine & didn't see a rap station. I guess there is a slight chance we missed it (as we weren't expecting one), but I think this is unlikely.

ok so maybe we did miss it... where exactly is the anchor (ie on top of the real finish or the easier finish up the corner to the right)?? dare I ask if its still there??

Hi James,
As disscused in a previous forum I did put a Rap anchor above "cloud nine" to stop the erosion and a very dangerous down climb but I must have hidden it well but it is there!
Cheers Rob

Yes there is a rap station above Cloud 9. I did it about 18 months ago. I did the direct finish, as described in Simey's guide, and it was up there somewhere obvious - but I was looking for it as I knew Rob had placed it there!

This anchor is already looking a bit dodgy. The 10mm cad plated dynas are quite rusty. The anchor
certainly is hidden down over the edge. You can't access it easily from the ledge above. It also works for
Red Rain.

I don't think the positioning of this anchor is as bad as everyone is making it seem. Its not that hard to find because its in the obvious place where it can service both Cloud Nine and Red Rain... i.e. from the direct finish of Cloud 9 it's a bit to your right, and from the exit gully of Red Rain it's a bit to your left. It's also a full 30m off the deck so any higher and it would've required 2 ropes. Agreed the scramble from above wouldn't be nice, but you can't have it all ...
