Bummer re the BASE incident.
Adventure is one thing; but it has its limits.
Hope the authorities don't use these things to outlaw adventure (in all its forms) at Bungonia ...
Like the Kachoong pic H-T.
Reasonable pro is evident in it; ...Much better than falling upside down and relying on one pin (with allegedly a solid b/u cam above it from late in the thread).

Blue Mountains BASE - jumping-pioneer-extraordinaire ,(the late), Dwain Weston, in Climb-mag :
'...climbers and BASE jumpers are among the few people that share the cliffs and the heights ... If you climb for long enough on big cliffs, chances are , one day someone will go sailing down the wall past you (maybe it will be a climber or abseiler but I'll bet it's a BASE jumper ), and when that happens , it'll be nice to have some understanding of what's going-on ...'

Thanks Mike, the hangliding ramp at Buffallo isn't really verticle but there's a good launch point at one of the lookouts. I haven't treked to the bottom yet to check out the landing area but will probably be being doing it soon.
Do you have any photos of Red Rocks on Ben Nevis?? 150m would be great if it's not too underhung.
*There are 2 jumpers who claimed to jump a cliff at Araps (the Bard*, I think). Can anyone tell me how high or how sheer it is and if there is anything else at Araps. I haven't been to Araps for years and it was before I started jumping so I wasn't really looking at it from a jumping perspective..

Red Rocks is WAAAAY under vertical. BASE jumping requires free fall - you don't glide out from above - you would hit and bounce!
Jumping from one pitch down from the top of the direct finish of Ozy would be my best bet. You would need to jump a good distance out but once travelling would have a good free fall for 200m or so.
Bard Butress at Araps is no more than 100m high and not vertical. It woudl be very scary (impossible?) base jump. Perosnally i think climbers would prefer you NOT to base jump of our most famous climbing area!. We already have enough litigation issues with accidents at Arapiles.
--------------------------------------
Neil gets an education : ' ...The Launch Pad , Blue Mountains : Even under-vertical cliffs can be jumped by taking a good run-up and then tracking ( angling your body so that as you fall, the air pushes you away from the wall ).The Launch Pad is probably the most demanding and intimidating jump yet done in Australia. When it was first jumped, no one knew if it would be possible to clear the under-vertical section of the cliff, even with a run-up and tracking...' ( Climb-mag )

Thanks Neil, can you please provide more detail on Ozy (location etc)? It sounds pretty promising.
Extreme909, Mt Rosea is one of the places I've been planning to check out along with the Fortress, Eureka Walls and Taipan walls. Can you porvide more info on Mt Rosea such as location in the Gramps, access etc.

Eureka - too short - less than 50m free fall with trees at base.
Fortress - maybe 70m free fall potential max. Bad place to have an accident. 2 hour walk in with heavy forest at base. You woudl have to get to the top of Passport to Insanty - which requires a tyrolyn traverse across a big chasm then you woudl need to rap down one pitch before you coudl jump. NOt possible in my humble opinion as it wudl be too short.

Are there any cliffs in Vic that are?? Ozy may be the best bet in regards to angle and height but the landing would be nasty! Steep slope with trees (at least what remains after the bush fires).
The only places I know of personally in Australia that people have base jumped off are *Bungonia gorge* and some cliffs in the Blue Mountains...

Arapiles pioneer & Hobart artist, Peter Jackson gets VERY amazed ! ...
' My landscapes usually embrace distant vistas and elevated views of big spaces. In contrast, Hare Lip[A Grade 17 @ Procters Quarry --- home of Tasmania's first sport-climb, Overdose(26) ] is a confined view of a shady rock wall. However the same aesthetics apply. The scene is very particularised. This applies to everything, including the lighting that challenges the tonal qualities of watercolour.
I work from photographs. Then I draw the image before I paint it. Details are important. But before all these, I see it as a ‘vision’, not just a view to be painted. It has to have penetrated me in a private way, demanding further indulgence and more intimate knowledge. It is like a sexual attraction...'

Ahhhh, yes --- the infamous Reg Maron ... --- Regi-boy diluted Ewbanks M6 aid-route on The Totem Pole when the said Reg placed an un-necessary carrot-bolt above the sentry-box , on the first pitch --- to abseil off --- while attempting a ' solo ' ascent ... Not sure how he was going to claim a solo ascent when he had someone belaying him on that first pitch ...
-----------------------------
Rob Star-chef-ski had an equally '...angst...'-ious time, gfdonc, when he found himself hanging from 3 x carrot-bolts, half-way up the beast : he told HEX, about 6 months later : " I was wishing there were 10 of the damn things !!! " ; At least they were stainless-steel --- the 13-year-old Ewbank ones having been replaced by Parsons&Bigg, on the 3rd ascent...
------------------------------
And finally, re the 2nd ascent (Kim& Lew',1974), there is an excellent account in Classic Climbs of Australia , where Kim recalls Ian abseiling down from the top, and then being blown back-up level with the abseil anchors, by a HUGE gust of wind !! --- now THAT'S 'angst' !!!

Whilst I cant claim to share Peter Jacksons apparent ardour for the quarries, I can appreciate the small joys that can be found when you see something beautiful hidden in a stark environment.
However the only painting I can see myself undertaking in the quarries is that digital form popular with pre-schoolers, with my artistic vision displayed not in water based paint, but using a white powdery medium.
Love your work on this thread Hex, especially the old quotes you seem to dredge up from old publications. Keep them coming!

Hexy gets inspiration , not only from doggy-eared climbing-mags from yesteryear, but also from comments, and ideas that get excreted onto ' this thread' ...; Sometimes they initially act like a road-side-bomb-blast !! , but usually the universal-climbing-spirit rises from the wreckage , like ' a fart dissapating in the breeze '(thanx Kieran), and spur ' The HEX ' on ,and prefferably up, to consider fresh angles , etc, etc, etc ... --- Many thanx to those with the political-guts who dare to contribute to anything associated with ' that bloody hex #$%^& ' ... ; and thanx for ' allowing ' Hexy to conduct cross-thread-raids to gather tit-bit-ingreedy-ants for brewing-up groovy-shit on this warping/mutating/cyber-evolving thread ...
