'...Several companies have begun guiding climbers up 16,023-foot Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia, one of the Seven Summits, three years after the mountain was closed to climbing. The Indonesian government stopped issuing permits to climb the peak in 2002, citing security problems in this remote area of Irian Jaya. The best land approach to the peak passes through an enormous gold and copper mine, and climbers trying to climb the peak illegally resorted to disguising themselves as mine workers and sneaking across the property or bribing soldiers and guards, further antagonizing government officials. Most would-be Seven Summiteers contented themselves with climbing 7,310-foot Kosciusko, considered by some to “count” as a continental high point because it’s the tallest peak in Australia.

In July, however, guiding services began making a legal approach to Carstensz base camp via helicopter. U.S.-based Mountain Trip took four clients to the top in mid-August, and Alpine Ascents, Mountain Madness, International Mountain Guides and other companies also are booking trips for this fall as peakbaggers rush to climb Indonesia’s highest before the rules can change again. Carstensz is an enormous block of limestone, and the standard route involves rock climbing up to 5.8. The climb doesn’t come cheap: Quoted prices for a guided climb with helicopter access range from $12,500 to $18,500 for the 14- to 20-day expedition, not including travel costs to Indonesia...'

'...Humar Saved By Helicopter

Tomaz Humar was plucked from his perch on the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat by a Pakistani Army helicopter in a dramatic and rare instance of modern “short-haul” rescue at high altitude. The Slovenian alpinist had been trapped for nearly a week atop a tiny snow arête at 19,400 feet, about one-third of the way up the Rupal Face, on which he was attempting a solo new route. Humar had aborted his climb at around 21,300 feet in very poor conditions, and after three miserable and dangerous bivouacs he had descended to the snow arête, which was somewhat sheltered from the nearly constant snow slides. There he spent another five nights, unable to descend because of storm and snow conditions, as his teammates in basecamp attempted to arrange a helicopter.

Two Pakistani Lama helicopters and a fuel chopper arrived yesterday, August 9, but were unable to approach the face because of storm clouds. This morning, just after dawn, the Pakistanis returned to basecamp and then flew toward Humar, dragging an improvised haul system of knotted climbing rope with a makeshift seat attached. Humar anchored himself loosely to an ice screw so we wouldn’t fall as he reached for the rescue rope, and successfully managed to grab the rope as it swung toward him from the helicopter hovering next to the icy wall. He climbed on and was pulled from the face, apparently ripping loose the anchor that he had forgotten to unclip. After a short ride back to basecamp, Humar was lowered to the ground and into the arms of his companions...'

& while were all a bit Eurocentric, at the mo', here's the latest news/Dalai's ' what is the future of climbing' installment ...

'...“The Nose” of the Grandes Jorasses

Mauro “Bubu” Bole and Mario Cortese have completed a 38-pitch free climb on the North Face of the Grandes Jorasses. The two Italians finished Le Nez (“The Nose”) on the famed north wall on September 4, after working on the route during the month of August. The route takes a direct line to the summit of the Croz Spur, with many hard free-climbing pitches, including five 5.12 leads, along with the Grandes Jorasses’ usual icy rock and mixed climbing. Several bolts were placed for protection on the 5.12+ crux pitch, but the majority of the climb relies on removable gear and pitons...'
