Thanz for the contribution Shin2woz ! --- not as silly as some might think ... after being pushed onto an electric-fence, by one of his cows, a farmer was cured from the very deb-bill-it-ate-ing Ross River Viruz, which he had been suffering from for many years ... word got 'round and it is now ' common' practice in rural areas to grab hold of electrick fences to do a bit of bug-blasting ...

'...infotainment need not be hedonic. Viewers have a hearty appetite for conflict, violence, personal threat. No news program is complete without them. Likewise with science. In the decades prior to the AIDS epidemic, science infotainment was replete with stories playing to the craving for calamity and enjoyment of the sense of personal threat. Fallout from nuclear testing, spring made silent by pesticides, overpopulation, nuclear winter, and the Greenhouse Effect are a few of the comprehensive doom scenarios that recruited large followings hungry for Apocalypse.
This curious hankering for threat is probably a first cousin to entertainments that feature the thrills of risk-taking and narrow escapes, such as bungy jumping, highspeed skiing, rock and mountain climbing, horror movies, sporting mayhem and so on. Social psychologist Irvine Schiffler calls these thrills the "charisma of hoax". Just as there is a little larceny in every heart, so Schiffler thinks that each of us is an actor fantasing a role in calamity play...'

Climbing in Palau?? Tuesday, 10 May 2005, Rich :
Just watching Survivor in Palau on channel 9 and it looks like theres a bit of potential there.. anyone know any details...
'...The Micronesian Games were first held in 1969 in Saipan, the capital of the Northern Marianas. The second games were scheduled to be held in 1972 but never took place. In a record span, the second games were not held until 21 years later in 1990. The Micronesian Games are organized for the small islands and territories of the Northern Pacific such as Guam, Northern Marianas, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Pohnpei, Chuuk and Kosrae. The games feature traditional events like track and field, swimming and basketball, but also some of the more unique events in sports including a spearfishing contest, *coconut tree climbing* and coconut throwing...'

David Lama, age 14, has redpointed Reini’s Vibes at Massone in Arco, Italy, a route considered “easy” 5.14c, according to www.8a.nu. Lama, who lives outside Innsbruck, Austria, has climbed more than a dozen 5.14 routes in several countries during the last year. More impressively, he has nearly onsighted several of these desperate routes, sending half a dozen 5.14s on his second effort. Lama has done two 5.14b routes at Misja Pec in Slovenia, including one, Vizija, that he redpointed in March on his second go.
Lama won his age group category at last year’s World Youth Championships, and last month he finished second in his age group at the European Youth Cup...'
