GRADE 23 ???
Lyle Closs

>Don't want to sound like an arse, and Henry was and is some kind of god, but he didn't introduce 23 to Australia. The first 23 was Albatross at Lowdina in Tassie, put up by Ian Lewis. Henry did the second ascent on his quick but awesome Tassie tour, a day or so after he freed Incipience (22) at Coles bay with me ineptly following. Albatross was probably the route that gave him the most trouble in Aus - he tried it a number of times and almost gave up before giving it one more try and getting up it. Unfortunately it was on a small, relatively unknown cliff and only Stefan Karpiniec was with him on the day - but that's irrelevant because the route was already done free when he got there, and it's still graded 23. He can certainly say he was the first to climb it on the first day he saw it - Ian tried it many times on many days before getting up it - but it was Australia's first 23. As we didn't quite realise 23 was possible back then I don't know if Ian had actually graded it 23, but Henry admitted to Stefan after climbing it that it was probably 23, and it still holds the grade.

Ian "Lew" Lewis was once described in a climbing mag as '... a blazing metior that streaked across the sky ...' or something similar ...
Kim Carrigan climbed with Lew in 1974 ...the year before the Barber tour ...
Lew was one of the best climbers in AUS ... but appears to have disappeared around this time ....
Does anyone know what happened to Lew ?...

U dint hear about that ascent?
They called it Arachnid, an yeh it has heaps in common with Cobwebs so very contrived imo.
There may be good news 4 Ur list tho, as jury is still debating about whether itz G34 or 33.

He sometimes posts on here as ilewis and it's the first time I've heard of him being called "Lew". Most Victorians called him Humzoo, often abbreviated to "Zoo".

BA, you're confusing Ian Lewis and Ian Thomas (Humzoo).
Ian Lewis, who I haven't met, was referred to as "Lew"

Insomnia 23 FA
c--k Corner 23 FFA
Deliverance 23 FFA
Kama Sutra 23 FFA
A Taste of Honey Direct Finish 23 FFA
Pebbles 23 FFA
Albatross 23 FFA
These are the 23s listed by Ted Cais...some are now 22 I think ....
Closss says Lew free climbed Albatrosss (Feb 1974) before Henry came to oz ... but I recallll the old Thrutch mags as reporting Albatross as 21 with rests ...
HOWEVER ... if Lew did do it free then thats SIGNIF cos Lew would have been the ' hardest ' climber in Oz in 74 ...AND Henry didnt advance the grades in Oz as is always trumpetted ... he just consolidated the status quo and cleaned up lots of aid routes ... and attitudes to free climbing ...

(If Joe went to Tassie after Qld, then this was also after his Insomnia 23 FA)

Stefan sheds the light!
In a nutshell, HB fell on his repeat attempt of Albatross, pulled the rope then did it successfully, and the way Stefans post reads, HB begrudgingly confirms Lewis's grade of 23.
... and just to confuseya... his link was to Albatross (23) attempt by Roark Muhlen - Photo S Karpiniec
