Dude you missed a great trip. There were five of us in the end. Myself, Ben and Brett down from Bendigo and Owen & Phil Nev up from Melbourne. We ticked 9 climbs over three areas, and definiately got a lot more in than had we rocked up without the guys to show us around.
The Youies reminds me a bit of Mt Beckworth. Lots of little areas spread out. Course grainte. Some nice slabs and jam cracks. Plus a lot of routes that were way over our abilities. We hit Urinal, Gravel Pit Tor, and Night Fall Pinnacle. The first was shorter than I expected, but had some good slab lines. Gravel Pit seemed the most popular of the three, with a couple of grade 16/17 trad lines that we really enjoyed. We briefly considered the 20 slab, but the first bolt was a death sentence away, and even the top rope set up didn't look too inviting, so we headed for Night Fall. Here I passed up a delightful grade 16 crack lead, which looked yuk from the ground, but turned out to be very enjoyable. Next time! We TRed a grade 19 that everyone but Owen seemed stuggle on. Phil mapped the sequence, finding a undercling to high reach crimp that paved the way for subsequent successes.
All up a very enjoyable trip, I think primarily because the five of us got along really well. Like Beckworth, the Youies has hundreds of routes. It pays to have a local point you in the direction of the good stuff. |
