Yes it’s possible, but takes a bunch of extra keystrokes.

For bold, put (without spaces) the following before the text involved, and put after it.

Likewise for italic, substituting i for b does the trick.

The additional typing ‘disappears’ in the reading version, so can’t be presented if shown in this post without the spaces.

To do both italic and bold at the same time you need to put the typed commands in a string before and after the desired text.
