Long posts cropped?!

Today I went to re read some old Trip Reports, and they've been cropped / tr_ncated mid post.

Has someone made an application settings change which has retrospectively deleted content exceeding a certain length?

Yes I write wordy TR's. My Ozymandias Direct one from 2011 needed me to cut up the TR into three consecutive posts (1 post then 2 relies) cause the content exceeded some sort of size setting, but now I see that the tail of each of those is now gone, and the posts trail off mid sentence :(

My Seventh Pillar one from 2011 is now missing about half the content too. Again it just trails off mid sentence :(

Anyone know the cause?
Both IE and Firefox render the content the same, so I'm left assuming Chocky just isn't serving up the data.

Thanks OP for starting a dedicated thread to the issue.

Cross-link to the few preceding posts discussing this issue... (basically page two of pi's 'A brief trip to Frenchman's Cap' trip report thread, that is now briefer than before!).

It is not just Trip Reports affected. The Short Stories thread has copped a hammering too.

PS, the sms-text (referred to in link above) has been sent, and we now wait to see if that valuable content can be restored.
I find it ironic that we have historical kind-of-useless stuff like 'For Sale items' (long since sold), still intact, but seem to have lost/be losing, personal interest / beta type stuff...

Sorry all, but as a result of the recent hacks, any data over 8000 characters in a single post has been lost.

You could edit your old posts and paste the reports back in, but given that the hacks are still occurring about once a day, the data would soon be gone again. What you'd need to do is break it up into smaller posts by using replies.

Despite some serious effort, I still don't know how these hacks are getting past all my defences. Currently I have a repair script that runs every 5 minutes, and that's kept the site going, but the breach is still happening, usually in the wee small hours of every morning.

This sounds messy, as the restoration* 'replies' to restore that content will now be at the tail end of threads instead of the initiating end.
(*Also sad to know my recent restoration of one of my TR's has likely been lost again...)

Those of us still using Chockstone with time and original versions to resurrect from, may do so, but it is sad to lose other content from Users that may no longer frequent Chockstone.

Is it possible, once the defence system is sorted, to restore from a backup to just the TR and SS threads?

On a slightly different topic, I have noticed an abundance of Fake Passport/DriversLicence/IDs spam getting onto Chocky; ... again usually happening in the small hours of the morning.
Perhaps if you add 'Fake Passports' to the block-list, it would save the Mods having to do a heap of cleaning up?

As long as any reference to passport to insanity stays safe!

As M9 (and probably no one else) would have noticed I have a habit of editing my TRs, many times to fix my terrible spelling, grammar and story telling. I don't have any of the edits backed up, only the original 'good enough to post on chokky, I'll try and fix it - make it good later' versions. If those final edits are gone then I'm of a mind to just delete my TRs for the time being, or leave them as incoherent carcasses.

You could post them to a blog somewhere and link them from the original post?

That way you're safe from (these) hackers, the thread maintains some semblance of coherence?

Mike,
If you want, I'm happy to run my eyes over your code and see if anything sticks out to me. There are probably others who would be happy to do the same.

I've had a look and most of it would be fixable if I had a test environment and a copy of the database, it'd just take a bit of time.

Mike, has this issue been sorted?
The hacks were some time back and we’ve changed platform since, so can any backups be retrospectively applied, or the 8000 character limit be raised?

Feedback from Mike (in a PM 25 May 2018)
>Hi,

>The good news is that there hasn't been any hacks for years after beefing up the checking it does for suspicious input. That repair script I was using back in 2015 hasn't been needed since.

>As you know though, the bad news is that the repair process cropped messages and the only way to get that content back is from a backup of the database, which I don't have from that long ago.

>Mike.

So it seems that unless original posters restore their content then it is gone, from an easily retrieved point of view.
