IMHO, the best way to generate some funds would be to have advertising on the site. There may only be 300 registered users, but this is just for forums. I'm sure if you counted the stats on sessions or IP addresses that have downloaded pages, there'd be more like thousands of readers, ie. thousands of reasons why a potential advertiser would be willing to part with hard cash in order to get their name on the site.
T-shirts are a good idea, but they're probably just an annual thing, and from my own experience it's difficult to make a profit from a small batch of T-shirts (ie. less than 500), as the production cost of the T's is too high. Still, I'd buy one at a markup if the proceeds were supporting chockstone, and put me down for a coffee mug and stubby holder too if these become available :-)
Another interim solution is to limit the cost by reducing the amount of download traffic. I'm not sure how much of your download volume is video, but I'm guessing a lot... You could for example limit the amount of video content available for download, or reduce the size and resolution of the video files. Streaming video might be another way to reduce the amount of video people are downloading. |
