I can't help but think that any dev time would be better spent towards writing the script to migrate the current forums posts to another less bespoke forums system (eg phpbb).

Perhaps it's the inner computer scientist in me, but it seems a bit silly persisting in reinventing the wheel (poorly) when there's freely available, better supported options out there just waiting to be used. You get all the features that others have spent more time and resources developing, ironing out the bugs and perfecting over time all within a framework that is easy for an admin to upgrade, patch and maintain. And being modular, you still can develop your bespoke extensions if required.

You know, it might be nice to have a system where you can search posts without it timing out 3 or 4 times. Or where the security loop holes get tidied up in a timely fashion.

I'm grateful for all the time that the admins of the current incarnation have devoted to this community, however even the most motivated community member can't compete with the army of people working on a fully featured, globally supported forums system. Why not jump on the band wagon, reap the rewards and make everyone's lives richer?
