Which is exactly why most forums have controls for opting in or out of the various email notifications. You may only want PM notifications, or not at all.

With thread watching notifications they only send one email when new activity happens, until you log in and view that thread again.

Also if you set up a mail rule then it doesn't fill your inbox at all, just your chocky folder.

Hey, it won't be everyone's cup of tea - but that's no reason not to offer it to those of us that would find it useful. Just opt out.
