I think that metal on metal is fine, the runner or quickdraw was in fact developed so that nuts did not lift
out of the placements, and falls on metal to metal biner links were common !
I also think that back then the shape of the biner was very different to the shape of today's biners !
In those days they were ovals, and as such were more difficult to cross load.
But with modern biners being such a radical shape, it is more likely to cross load than the standard oval.
That is my primary reason for avoiding the metal to metal linkage, I want to avoid accidental cross
loading of an eccentric shaped biner.
Other than that I have a dedicated metal end biner on all my draws to avoid the rope being damaged by
running across the nicks cut into the biner after having it loaded across a bolt plate or fixed hanger.
