(After many years of visiting/lurking, finally entering de-lurk mode). First post here. Hi to all.

From Niall’s post it seems pretty obvious that his gear could not have just been stumbled upon by a “Joe Bloggs” or land manager. And from the way it was stashed, it would have been clear that the rope was being stored there and had not been dropped, or inadvertently left behind. The person who took it had to uncover it and pull it out.

It is most likely that it was taken by someone who had just climbed up Niall’s route. (A route that Niall had taken the time and money to establish). It would have been a fair guess that the rope belonged to the route/crag developer.

From where I stand, Niall’s gear was stolen.

So, what of a code of behaviour amongst climbers? Things like:

- Don’t step on other climber’s ropes
- Don’t climb other people’s projects
- Don’t claim to have onsighted/flashed/red-pointed a climb if you didn’t onsight/flash/red-point the climb
- Respect the bolting ethics of a crag
- And don’t be a scumbag and steal someone’s rope.
