Yeah its used in canyoning too. Ive heard it called the "macrami knot" and the way I was shown is as you just descibed but you repeat the process 7 times. Rap on the last side you tightened and at the bottom pull each side in turn and it comes free. In canyoning it negates theneed for leaving slings etc around trees.
