Garmin eTrex series are the goods....I've had two: the basic eTrex and the Summit HC. There are alot of models in the series which cater to different needs. Do you need in-built mapping (and don't forget that the software costs extra)? An altimeter and electronic compass? Personally, I'd go something with a high-sensitivity receiver, colour screen, decent battery life (20hrs+), and the capability to take mapping software. Google 'Johnny Appleseed'. Its a gps store in St Kilda...worth going in if you want to play around with a unit before you rip out the bill-fold...
