I made a cam once, it worked ok. never fell on it but one of my mates did and it held up ok. The cams were made from some 5000 series alloy so a bit soft compared to the commercially made units, it is now retired. also made a big wedge from laminating 20mm ply together, never actually used it but I reckon itd be strong enough and being softer would certainly seat well.Put together a rough ascender too, it is marginal in terms of operation, no spiky bits on the cam so it doesn't grip great and doesn't inspire confidence, but I suppose its rope friendly, hasn't seen much use.
