It's a long time since I've read the Euro standard on Karabiners (EN12275). I'm sure there were three load requirements: length ways, cross ways, and lenth ways with open gate. There was even a specification in the test method that said that if a stable cross ways condition could not be achieved, groove has to be filed into the gate to stabilise the test rig attachment. I don't see how a carabiner could have a CE compliance mark without an open gate and cross ways load rating. JamesMc
