"Thanks for re-affirming my understanding of humanity." Happy to oblige. It was of course toungue in cheek. In most cases cams are placed with the direction of fall in mind. Like you said the direction of pull is outwards rather than down and also not under consistent pressure. The torquing of the cams through 90 degrees or so is a big part of it. I most cases this is only a problem with the first peice. As there is unlikely to be the same amount of pull on a 4-5 peice as it is more likely to be in a straight line. Helps if the belayer is standing directly in line with the line of the rope rather than away from the rock.
