Hi Cliff,
I was also in Rjukan a couple of weeks ago and was blown away by the crowds (too much snow on the routes high up in the hills so everyone down in the gorge?). We had been in Setesdal prior to that but it was too warm. Could be in condition now though. Much nicer place to be than Rjukan; no other climbers, nice area, elk running around, big frozen lakes, etc.
A limited amount of information is available (in norweigan) at http://www.steepstone.com/isklatring/forer/setesdal/default.asp
Otherwise I can email you a MS word doc with about 120 routes in it (really good directions, route descriptions etc). Note that you need a car to get around and you'll be breaking trail to get to all the routes so snow shoes/skis useful. Check that the accom in Valle is open.
Just as an aside I went to Cogne in Italy last week and it was awesome, great routes in good nick, not too many other climbers, lots of long 200-300m middle grade routes and with the Gran Paradiso and Mont Blanc to look at while you're on the belay. |
