Quite possible!

But because I was so convinced of the logic of BP's approach (and because that was the tentative conclusion I'd reached for myself before this discussion) I talked round and round with this shop guy trying to figure out the in's and out's of using dynamic rope vs slings. He was just so anti the dynamic rope for my purposes - being able to clip in quick either while seconding or pfaffing with the anchor when leading or rethreading on sports routes - that I followed his advice.

On the whole, it's a bit tough for me cos I'm reasonably new to leading and fiddling with gear, so since he said the sling is safe so long as not shock-loaded, I figured I could deal with that.
