I have a pair of GME handheld UHF CB's, not sure what model as they arent with me right now. Ive had no problem with range, as I only use them on pitches with communication problems (with a rope-tug backup obviously), and since a pitch is usually only 50-60m at best, even the most insane rock feature is bypassed.

When it comes to having it easily available, all I did was tie a few knots around the built in belt clip on the radio and then attach that with a biner to my harness, with enough length that I could pull it up and talk directly into it while still being attached to the harness, any self-respecting climber should be able to tie solid enough knots to the belt clip.

That being said, a radio is no substitute for knowledge of self-rescue, and anyone starting out should never assume that a UHF radio will save them if shit hits the fan.... (dont laugh, Ive had people state this 'fact' to me).
