When I was in the states I bought some outdoor gear from REI, completely unrelated to climbing as I wasnt into it back then. Anywho, very large chain across america. If I was going to buy anything from overseas I would get it from them. They have a hugh range of climbing gear, with reasonable shipping costs. I was going to make a substantial purchase with them but after you take into account, cost of goods + duty + shipping, it is probably better just getting it from someone like steve at rockhardware.com.au. Or your local outdoor store.
Unless you are going to make a substantial purchase, ie. in the thousands, In which case you'd probably be better of flying over there, getting all your stuff then flying home. The cost of the flight would probably be negated from the savings from the purchase, yay - free trip.
I feel your pain with buying your first rope. There are so many choices which makes it hard, in the end i just went to my local outdoor store and bought myself a very cool, mammut supersafe which I am highly impressed with. And you'd be surprised how much discount you can get through sheer bargaining power. There is just to much competition out there for them to not want your hard earn buckaroos.
