its all a myth.the way biners were originally made(die cast i think??) they would do this, get the micro fractures. but due to improvements in technologie they're now made so that they all will have similar properties to steel, ie bend bounce etc but not crack. a friend tests and makes gear for a living. to test this whole crack theory out he got a few different biners and belt the shit out of them. some so much so that they had to be bent back into shape so they would close. he tested them to failure. surprisingly they failed close to their rated strengths.

virtually no manufacturers make biners the old way, so the only way you'd get one that does crack would be a real old one. IMO this is on the same level as "treading on ropes puts particles in it that eats away at the core"

oh and which job site used biners for a crane? DODGY!!!!
