i don't like the idea of leaving gear overnight, exposed in the open.

Personally i also wouldn't have climbed on that anchor on day 1. I know John Sherman has been doing
this stuff for a bloody long time, but a two point anchor system for multiple days on rope prepping a route,
and not a single locking carabiner in the anchor system.
Giving him the benefit of the doubt: Maybe we can't see the whole anchor, maybe
he's taken something out for the clarity of the photo.
But with the anchor as shown in photos, IMO, not my idea of a safe anchor.
