OK I will try, the most important feature is of course the ability to soften the impact of a fall, i.e. the quality and firmness of the foam. Unless you specialise in but dragging traverses and or low roof problems then make sure the pad has a good thick layer of closed cell foam that may feel hard on the ground but will stop you bottoming out when you come off from a great height.

Next up is size, as they say, it is no good having a great thick pad if you miss it. The bigger the pad the bigger the landing zone. Obviously practical issues such as carrying it around and fitting it in your car are imortant here.

A covering of carpet like material is good for cleaning shoes etc but I find it is just as easy to carry out a car mat since you rarely place your pad right at the start of a problem anyway.

Solid preferably metal buckles are good.

The ability to turn you pad into a comfy chair is great.

The ability of the pad to carry gear etc without it falling out.

Carry straps, backpack style, over the shoulder sling and suitcase handles.
