I use an inReach SE and it makes a huge difference to have two-way communication especially if you're in remote areas. They are a bit bulky but the battery life is phenomenal (5 days easy). A PLB/EPIRB is a nice and cheap alternative - you can pick them up for around $200 SPOT messengers are utterly shit. Beside the general coverage issue they are unreliable and I had a unit which just died - unfortunately that was in a rescue situation in remote India. Googling turned out I'm not the only one. Stay away from them > they might not work when needed.
