I tested the Spot devices whilst out in the Pacific and discovered that they are limited by the footprint of the satellite service that they use (and guess when you will find out that you are outside the satellite footprint!). A much better alternative is the Delorme inReach, which uses the Iridium satellite service, which has total global coverage. The inReach also has the ability to enter and receive text, so no need to pair it with a mobile phone. http://www.alwaysinreach.com.au
