That article’s been bugging me since I read it this morning. It probably shouldn’t, but there you go. Maybe it’s just funny, “ha ha, hot chocolate? My water’s salty? Morons!” The question about when to call for a rescue isn’t really answerable. It’s different for everybody. Clearly there are situations where a rescue is warranted and situations like, well, the salty water. Maybe those guys really thought they were going die from dehydration, who knows. Sometimes the rescues are so frustratingly, maddeningly incompetent they deserve to be billed for being so stupid. It’s sad we do such a poor job of teaching people to be comfortable and safe in the bush, that they think a GPS or a SPOT or an EPIRB will keep them out of trouble (instead of some actual skills.) Then again, maybe that’s not it at all and like the sign over the door says, you just can’t stop stupid. I don’t know which is sadder.
