Mad rock shoes 22-Aug-2005 At 5:21:18 PM trent

My 2005 Madrock Sharks developed a hole in right upper. I bought these shoes in Hong Kong but Peter at Madrock Australia did all he could to help me out. Most people are unaware that the majority of climbing shoes only have a 30 day warranty. This is understandable given some of the treatment climbing shoes get. The tear in mine was not in an area climbing shoes usually wear and inspection by Madrock deemed the tear to be a result of a flaw in the leather. Peter sent my shoes to Big John who repaired the shoe with a leather patch(and did a great job), then sent them back to me quickly.

So i got a pair of shoes that were purchased overseas, that had no receipt and were out of their warranty period, repaired for free and returned inside two weeks. Thats not bad service for a $140 pair of shoes.

Madrocks are value for money shoes. There arent the best quality shoes in the world but they arent the anywhere near as expensive as most other brands and they perform very well. The rubber is sticky and it lasts as well as many other 'high price' brands.

A lot of the wear in climbing shoes comes from abuse and less than ideal storage. Leaving them in the back of your car on a hot day or wet and sweaty in the bottom of your pack isnt going to do your shoes any favours. I always air my shoes when I get home from a day at the crag. As a result my last pair of Madrock Flashes lasted around 60 days (before they had a resole) and my Madrock Maniacs have see around 40 sessions use indoors. My Anasazi Velcros have seen around 30 days use on moderate-hard routes look no better or worse than the Flashes did ater the same amount of use.

I love my Anasazis but for training, warming up and moderate routes I use and will continue to use Madrocks.

Shoe wear also comes down to footwork - an aspect of climbing that nearly all of us could improve on.
