It is desperately trying to communicate with the base station it's communicating with. Flight mode is a great idea. You know how lost people always seem to run out of battery just after contacting police ? It's this reason. I often leave it off if I'm hoping to use it as acomunications backup in the event of a mishap. Texts use very little power compared to a phone call, but you don,t have guaranteed delivery.
