Thanks for the support bones... yes the whole point was to talk about which was more likely to get stuck and which would be easier to pull down if it occurred.
Looks like you know what you are talking about Olbert, seems to make sense, thanks for taking the time to give such a detailed answer (i now realize the force comes from the deceleration of the climber by the rope, so the rope generates the forces, rather than absorbs them, yes?).
I was talking about both falls and ropes getting stuck; relating the properties from one to the other if that makes sense. I did use the word potential energy (I never actually said ropes do not absorb energy, I thought that the energy was stored in the rope as the force was absorbed for some reason, I stand corrected) in my last post though. If you look about there are several pages online (dodgy sources which I am not going to bother to ref) which talk about ropes absorbing forces, so I’m not the only one who is mistaken (easy enough mistake to make considering gear has kN ratings as well). Sterling talk about ropes absorbing energy (slightly less dodgy, if a rope manufacturer doesn't know what they are talking about then we are all in trouble!).
Sterling also state that 'dynamic ropes have much higher levels of twist in the sheath and core yarns creating mechanical elongation to act like a spring absorbing the energy created during a fall.' this last bit is bullshit yes? As energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another. Gravitational potential energy converted into you falling the f--- down energy (there is absolutely no science behind this statement so piss off lol)...
Yep probably only slightly more chance of a dynamic getting stuck (in my opinion ). But if that means your rope gets stuck when you’re under a massive waterfall and you’re freezing your ass off and it’s getting late and you only have that one rope and no knife....
Btw the whole point of my original post was to say that the majority of canyoners prefer to use static ropes. That is all... I was stating a fact (this bit is not an opinion). The dynamic properties are completely useless in a canyon (unless you are going up it). This was all blown way out of proportion by a troll. I have noticed people who bolt prefer statics as well... hummm...
You know, it’s amazing how much nicer this forum is when you block onedayboring. Really don't need to hear his input (bullcrap) on anything really. Sure I will miss out on things like budget hat look up glasses, etc... But really, who gives a shit.... do you reckon he masturbates whenever he pisses someone off? Must be something like that driving him, otherwise why would you bother....
