static is best for canyons for similar reasons they are best for caving (tougher etc). They are also nicer to pull down when wet and are less likely to get stuck (the stretching is a pain in the ass in this case sometimes). you also don't bounce as much while your abseiling which reduces the wear from rubbing on the edge, etc.

don't use your good climbing rope canyoning, it will get ruined (although if you need to clean it a quick run through empress will clean it up nicely!).

I do use a bit of an old climbing rope at the moment for short drops, but I always have something to back it up in case it gets stuck (generally a friends static rope) (this has happened and i had to chop it off as high as i could, turns out the burnt bit on the end of the rope got caught in a grove in a log. this combined with the stretch made it impossible to pull down).
