yeah man i would say do the course first. for abseiling i would actually recomend a rap rack over anything. they are heavy and sort of annoying but for going down they are the bomb great friction and heat distribution and can configure a lot of different ways. also easy to lock off. however on your course you will be using an 8. i don't like them couse of the kinking and if you plan to do your trevers an 8 is no good on a fixed and rope a rap rack is fine so is a atc. but in saying all of this i would with what ever you buy get an atc and an 8 as well, cause they are only like 20 bucks each.
oh forgot to address the gri gri option. i have one for climbing and i love it however when it come to abseiling i wouldn't remoned it as it requires two hand use at all times to operate and can be very dangerous if you freak out and pull the handle. however if using a rack or eight with a trailing belay(you should learn this in your course) then the second hand can hold the prussik down and stabalise your body as well.
like said before their are many pros and cons. you will have to use the diferent devices for your self and see what you like. i personally find 8s a fast device and harder to rap off. however the grigri and the stop can only use one rope so if you start doing double rope abseiling then it is useless. an atc is good all round, however it doesn't disperse the heat and can potentially melt the rope if doing long decents. rap racks are heavy and only good for going down cannot pull rope back through them to take out slack in the rope for anyreason.
i personally have 4 devices an 8, atc, grigri and a sort of rap rack.
oh and this is a rap rack. http://www.petzl.com/en/outdoor/descenders/rack
