My favourite running shoes are the Salomon XT Wings. I have a pair in both non-goretex and goretex.

I use the non-goretex ones for almost everything, but the times I use the goretex ones I'm very glad I have them. I've used the goretex as my city shoe in Canada in winter, and around the city in a wet winter the goretex keeps out more water than the sweat can build up, and the added warmth and wind resistance are very much worth it.
I have also taken the shoes up Mt Feathertop, Bogong etc while carrying my Nepals in my pack. It definately was faster and lighter that way. I scrambled up Mt Lady MacDonald (Canmore, Canada) in goretex trail runners during winter and found them to be perfect for it. Walking up through snow in non-goretex trail runners would just be asking for cold feet.
