If you go back to the exercise physiology studies that tested this, it's actually more like 1kg on the foot = 6-9kg on the back. Chunky boots are only for above the snowline and runners can be used just about anywhere else as long as you don't have fragile ankles or something.

As for Goretex in footwear it's surely a marketing gimmick(?) Once gortex membranes are dirty they don't breathe...I dunno about anyone else but not matter how much care I take, my shoes end up coated in mud and dust inside and out. And what about durability of the membrane? A sales dude in one of the Kent st stores proudly trumpeted that the membrane is good for "100000 flexes"...but when you do the sums that's maybe a couple of big weekends.
