I am a massive sneaker convert. I just got back yesterday from Mt Murchison (2408m) in Arthurs Pass NP, NZ. The walk in is 24 km up a river with numerous crossings and a few boggy sections to a hut. I wore sneakers (cheap adidas with a decent tread and plenty of mesh to let water in/out) with decent socks for the river and snow below hut and carried boots (+ dry socks) and crampons for the snow/ice above the hut. Yes it adds weight but we caught two groups that had 2 and 4 hours start on us respectively who were trying to keep their feet dry with heavy wet boots on.

Once you get your feet wet in the river or mud they dry out pretty quick after that. And your feet stay pretty warm even being dunked into glacial melt every now and then.
