Sorry Rockotter I disagree - I've been through enough mud bogs in leather boots and not got wet feet. CitationX - I agree. I've spent about 5 yrs running round the English and Welsh hills like an idiot in a pair of crap leather boots and it annoys me that a lot of people in trekking/camping shops try and sell you boots with goretex in. Half the time the people buying these shoes (and selling some times) are arm chair commandos who have heard that Goretex is a material that came out of the space race and is a must have to look good on the hills so everyone sells it. Leather does not have the waterproof capabilities of goretex but it will keep your feet very dry through bogs puddles etc etc unless water gets in over the tops, in which case Goretex is not going to be doing much different. Feet get blisters as a result of excessive sweating and rubbing which is a lot more likely when you have goretex and when the boots do get wet they are a nightmare to then get dry again.

Personally I think goretex in runners is a bit of a joke - but if you're looking at a pair for a footpath walk that might occasionally get splashed then I can see where you're coming from (compared to a pair of normal thin running shoes - ie not leather ones).
