The Canons are good but recently my gf bought a camera for her trip to the US, we did a lot of research and found the Sony HX9V to be a good camera. It's about $500 so top end of your budget but is a really good camera. http://www.dpreview.com/products/sony/compacts/sony_dschx9v the main benefit to this camera over the Canon s95 and G12 is the long zoom, normally cameras with heaps of zoom suffer from lens issues (barrel distortion, colour fringing etc..) however the lens on the HX9V performs extremely well dispite its zoom range. Also, i like to visit http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/132?&p=2 to get opinions on equipment and such and found most people there be helpful.
