I agree that a chest harness would be an overkill but I'd think twice about gloves as they can only make it harder to grip an already slippery rope. If the brunt of your question is "how can I gain a bit more security" I'd be inclined to consider a very simple tape waist band with a s'gate 'biner running freely along the rope - your pack is tied the bottom of the rope so that would be where you would stop if you completely lost control... might hurt a bit though. I would also suggest practicing/experimenting with a range of traditional abseiling techniques for times when extra friction was required.
