If follow what you are doing, I would think an improvised chest harness (eg Parisian Baudrier), made from a long tape sling, and then a munter hitch around the carabiner would work and be pretty light weight. If one munter/italian hitch is not enough friction, then you can tie one on top of another (sort of). It also doesn't twist the rope as much.
