To elaborate on what andrew said, the length of the wiregate and the positioning of the holes they pivot in is designed such that the 'at rest' position for the wiregate is out somewhere beyond the nose of the carabiner. So anywhere in its normal operational range, it's actually trying to bend the wire of the wiregate which is why it wants to pivot closed. Measure the lengths involved and plot the arcs in 2d on a sheet of paper.
