My boyfriend has a primaloft vest which is pretty awesome, it is light, stays warm when it is wet, and you can fold it up pretty small if you really stuff it in something (a bit like a sleeping bag). They arn't cheap though.
I have a windproof fleece I got from mountain designs for around $100 on sale, which is awesome. Pop a few thermals underneath it and you are good to go, the windproof factor keeps you much warmer than you would expect for a jacket of its type. It is bulky, like all fleece, but less bulky than down.
You definitely want thermals, the woolen ones are best but can be a bit exxy, have a search on ebay, and sometimes they turn up in secondhand stores (I assume because they are unwanted gifts...?). Thermals are great because they are so lightweight, so warm, and can be layered depending on the weather conditions. Layering is the key really, light stuff will keep you warm if you layer it.
If you are in Melbourne there is a shop which specialises in lightweight travel adventure gear, called Backpacking Light, they are on Somerset Place, just off Little Bourke St near all the other adventure stores. They are pretty good, and often have some good specials, the staff are friendly too, not pushy (which I like).
Good luck. |
