Rock Climbing: Mastering Basic Skills (Mountaineers Outdoor Expert) by Craig Luebben is a pretty comprehensive book. It covers everything from the absolute basics to more advanced things such as ensuring you and your rigging is equipped to deal with some what-if scenarios for when things go a bit pear-shaped. There's something in it for most people, irrespective of what level they're coming from.

I'd say it easily covers 85% of the things that you do on climb leader / self-rescue courses. Granted, there's nothing like one-on-one tutoring, but it's still a very useful reference resource.

I usually hand it around when we get new blood in our climb group. It's good for exposing people to new/alternative techniques and a stimulus for conversation (or debate!)
