After 30 more seconds of high-quality googling, it seems abandonment has little to do with it. If you find something (regardless of how it got there) you're not required to hand it over (to the police or a local authority) but you are required to make a reasonable effort to locate the owner. Posting, or responding to a post, on Chockstone constitutes a reasonable effort. If the owner isn't forthcoming, then you can keep it. But theft is committed when you form the intention to deprive the owner of his property. Legal advice, straight from the interwebs. Kind of sucks; the booty system is good.
